Materials: Dice, 3 small slips of paper per student, 3 boxes or containers
1. Give each student three small slips of paper. On the backs, have them assign +0, +5, and +10—one score to each slip.
2. On the fronts, students write one item for each category:
👤 Subject (a person or animal)
🏃 Verb
📍 Place
Put the slips into three separate boxes: Subject, Verb, and Place.
3. Start Roll & Change:
🎲 1–2 → draw from the Subject box
🎲 3–4 → draw from the Verb box
🎲 5–6 → draw from the Place box
4. Use the item drawn to change the previous sentence. Example: Original: “I am dancing in the bathroom.” Roll a 1 and draw “My dog” → “My dog is dancing in the bathroom.”
5. If the new sentence is correct, flip the slip over to reveal the score: +0, +5, or +10. ✨
💡 Because the possible answers are prepared before the game, students do not have to invent a subject, verb, or place on the spot. This makes the activity friendlier for lower-level classes—and the random combinations often become hilariously silly. 😆
If students cannot think of what to write, brainstorm as a class first or provide a small word bank for each category.
✏️ You can also pair the game with a worksheet for extra sentence-writing practice.
